A Dialogue Between Dancers
As this discussion focuses on the ways in which women can perform their femininity, it was important to understand how this can be understood in terms of actual aesthetic performance. Two art forms through which women and artists have attempted to reclaim their womanhood are striptease and pole dancing, both contoversial in their own ways, but both important steps in understanding and critiquing gender performativity and empowerment.
In this discussion, two female dance teachers discuss the mechanics and importance of each. Juanita Praeg is a Rhodes University Drama lecturer, who teaches 3rd Years an elective term-long course about striptease. Erika Wertlen is a dynamic pole dance fitness instructor who believes in the empowerment that mastering the pole can give to all people, not just women.
